SIRSI DYNIX / IBISTRO
Want to know if we have a book or find certain books of interest BEFORE you come to the library?
Well, just log onto AISD's online library catalog (SIRSI DYNIX...or as we like to call it...ibistro) and search Oak Hill Library's collection.

Go to http://ibistro.austinisd.org and click on Oak Hill. You can search by author, title, or subject.
You can also find books similar to  the books you already enjoy by using the "find more books by this author" or "find more books on these topics" options once they are inside the book's record.

You can even make a list (like a shopping cart) by selecting KEEP as you find books you like. You can either print this list or write down the call numbers of the books you want so they are prepared ahead of time for your next visit.
We continue to practice with this tool in the library day, but if YOU are interested in learning  a little more, stop by the library, and I can give a quick tutorial so you can use it at home and/or in the classroom

iMovie

Ms. Tarpley's class created an movie to promote 80s night. What a great tool to use for book trailers, commercials, or any visual presentation.

TIP: imovie on ipad is a much easier/friendlier version than the desktop version. Students will be able to use it better.

POWTOON - https://www.powtoon.com
Powtoon is a great tool to create animated videos and presentations (and it's FREE)
There are templates or you can design your own. There are great tutorials to walk you through the steps.
Here is a Day of the Dead small group presentation through Powtoon from Mrs. Tarpley's 3rd grade class and one done for Volunteer Appreciation (Mrs. Nowakowski-Grimm) to see the variety you can create.

DESIGNING CATAPULTS WITH IPADS and SHOW ME APP

Mrs. Chedsey's class researched catapult information while designing their own catapult.
Students accessed the curriculum activity page that Mrs. Chedsey set up on their class website. This page had pre-picked links to information about catapults that students could open to do their research as they designed, tested, and redesigned. (Making these prearranged curriculm research pages for your students to access will ensure your students are using authentic sites for their research.)
Once they had their final product, they used the SHOW ME APP to make a mini slide show with pictures, videos, and sound to explain their process and creation.

Here they are in action:

SHOW ME is also a good app to make tutorials / how tos or create and share your lessons for kids to use on their own

AUSTIN JAZZ WORKSHOP

While students listened to the jazz performance, they learned facts about the composers, songs, and music through a PowerPoint presentation.

Did you know you can save each slide in a PowerPoint as a jpeg? Check out your options under the SAVE AS menu and select jpeg as the file type. This would be useful whenever you need a picture of one of your slides to use outside your PowerPoint.
